Reading your own constitution

AyurvedaDr. Vikram Nair12 August 20268 min read

The doshas are not personality types, and the online quizzes do them no favours. Here is what a practitioner is actually looking at.

Most people meet the doshas through a five-question quiz and come away with a label. The label is not wrong, exactly, but it is not what a practitioner means when they use the same words.

A consultation looks at what is happening now — digestion, sleep, temperature, appetite, energy through the day, how you respond to seasons — and compares it with what appears to be your baseline. The interesting part is the gap between the two.

Constitution versus current state

Your constitution is relatively stable. Your current state is not; it moves with the season, with age, with travel, with how the last six months have gone. Almost all practical guidance concerns the second, not the first.

The question is never only “what are you”. It is “what has changed, and when did it start”.

This is why the same guest can be advised differently in March and October, and why we revise programmes mid-stay rather than fixing them on arrival.
