Most sleep difficulty is not a night-time problem. It is a problem with the hour that precedes it — and with the eleven hours before that.
Sleep is the thing guests most want to improve and the thing they most expect to fix with a single change. It rarely works that way.
What we see repeatedly is a day that ends abruptly. Work continues until it stops, and then sleep is expected to begin twenty minutes later. The body has had no signal that anything is winding down.
A descending hour
- Dinner early enough that digestion is not still working at bedtime
- Lower, warmer light for the last hour
- Something for the hands that is not a screen
- Warm oil at the feet — unglamorous and remarkably effective
None of this is dramatic. It is the accumulation that matters. Guests who keep two of these four usually report a change within a fortnight of going home.
